Basic notions of lexicology: categorization, naming, lexicolization, motivation.
Categorization — is breaking our knowledge of the word based on sense-data into certain mental categories (ideas or concepts).

Naming — is the process of giving names to ideas or concepts.
3 types:
 prepositional meaning — is performed by free-word combinations. Is studied by Syntax.
 discursive naming — is performed by texts. Is studied in stylistics and text analysis.
 lexical naming — is performed by LU. Is studied by L.

Lexicolization — naming by a LU (outsource)

Motivation — a certain connection between the phonemic or the morphemic form of a word and the concept that it names.
3 types:
 phonetic — shows that there is a certain connection between the phonetic form of the word and the concept it names (cuckoo)
 morphological — shows that there is a connection between morphological form of the word and the concept that it names (a teacher)
 semantic — is found in words that have new senses derived from old senses (a net)
Motivation is a dynamic phenomenon. The word is non-motivated when there is no synchronically-perceptible reason for the word to name a new concept.
